The Edmonton International Film Festival (EIFF), Shorts HD & Magnolia Pictures present the OSCAR® Nominated Short Films in all three (3) categories — Animation, Live Action & Documentary.  This is your opportunity see ALL of the nominees in each category BEFORE the Academy Awards on SUNDAY, February 9 (and be the rock star at the office OSCAR® pool). Proceeds from the OSCAR® Nominated Short film programs supports this year’s EIFF (September 24 to October 3, 2020).  All films in non-English language are presented with ENGLISH subtitles.

LIFE OVERTAKES ME

Dirs: Kristine Samuelson & John Haptas | 39-mins. | Sweden/USA

The story of two traumatized children of the refugee diaspora in Sweden, who are in such profound despair that they withdraw into a life-threatening, coma-like state called Resignation Syndrome.  A Netflix original film.  Swedish and Ukrainian with English subtitles.

LEARNING TO SKATEBOARD IN A WARZONE (if you’re a girl)

Dir: Carol Dysinger | 40-mins. | UK

In Afghanistan, there are limited athletic and recreational opportunities for women and girls.  But there is a new generation of Afghan girls who believe they can do anything, as they start to learn how to read, write – and even skateboard – in Kabul.  A Netflix original film.  Dari with English subtitles.

IN THE ABSENCE

Dir: Seung-jun Yi | 28-mins. | South Korea/USA

An unflinching look at the Sewol ferry disaster in South Korea.  Employing extensive archival material and in-depth historical research, telling the story of the ferry that capsized and sank in the Yellow Sea on April 16, 2014, killing more than 300 people, mostly high school students on a field trip.  Korean with English subtitles.

WALK RUN CHA-CHA

Dir: Laura Nix | 20-mins. | USA

Paul and Millie Cao fell in love as teenagers in Vietnam but were soon separated by the war.  Six years later they reunited in California.  Now, after decades of working hard to build new lives, they are making up for lost time – on the dance floor.

ST. LOUIS SUPERMAN

Dirs: Smriti Mundhra & Sami Khan | 28-mins. | USA

Bruce Franks Jr., a Ferguson activist and battle rapper who was elected to the overwhelmingly white and Republican Missouri House of Representatives, must overcome both personal trauma and political obstacles to pass a bill critical for his community.
