The Edmonton International Film Festival (EIFF), Shorts HD & Magnolia Pictures present the OSCAR® Nominated Short Films in all three (3) categories — Animation, Live Action & Documentary.  This is your opportunity see ALL of the nominees in each category BEFORE the Academy Awards on SUNDAY, February 9 (and be the rock star at the office OSCAR® pool). Proceeds from the OSCAR® Nominated Short film programs supports this year’s EIFF (September 24 to October 3, 2020).  All films in non-English language are presented with ENGLISH subtitles.

Dir: Matthew A. Cherry | 7-mins. | USA

It’s up to Daddy to give his daughter, Zuri, an extra-special hairstyle in this story of self-confidence and the love between fathers and daughters.  No dialogue.


Dir: Daria Kashcheeva | 15-mins. | Czechia

In a hospital room, the Daughter recalls a childhood moment when, as a little girl, she tried to share her experience with an injured bird with her Father.  A moment of misunderstanding and a lost embrace has stretched into many years all the way to this hospital room, until the moment when a window opens…. No dialogue.


Dir: Siqi Song | 8-mins. | USA

A man thinks back to his childhood memories of growing up with an annoying little sister in China in the 1990s.  What would his life have been like if things had gone differently?  Chinese with English subtitles.


Dir: Bruno Collet | 12-mins. | France

The world appears to be changing for Louis, a painter, and his wife Michelle.  In fact, recently all sorts of strange things have been happening to them.  French with English subtitles.


Dir: Rosana Sullivan | 9-mins. | USA

An unlikely connection sparks between two creatures: a fiercely independent stray kitten and a pit bull.  Together, they experience friendship for the first time.  From Pixar Studios.  No dialogue.

Dir: Rachel Johnson | 15-mins. | USA

A new stop-motion short about a young woman’s journey to overcome her limitations and see her dreams take flight.  Award-winning filmmaker, Rachel Johnson, challenges the concept of beauty and explores themes of determination, acceptance and self-discovery.


Dir: Carol Freeman | 7-mins. | Ireland

Director/Writer, Carol Freeman, uses an old-fashioned technique called paint-on-glass to form each luminescent frame. At seven minutes long, THE BIRD & THE WHALE is comprised of 4,300 paintings created by a small team of female artists in Dublin, Ireland.  No dialogue.  Official selection at the 2019 Edmonton International Film Festival!


Dirs: Léo Brunel, Camille Jalabert, Loris Cavalier, Oscar Malet | 6-mins. | France

Two men who have been working on rescue missions for most of their life set out on one more assignment. However, things do not go as planned, leading to hilarious situations.  No dialogue.


Dirs: Florian Babikian & Victor Caire | 2-mins. | France

Deep in the forest, a gathering of wild animals start a nocturnal opera, conducted by… a squirrel.
