This film screens as part of Lunchbox Shorts: THURSDAY

Director: Jörgen Scholtens | 7-mins | Netherlands | Comedy

Absurd comedy about a lonely man (Frank Lammers) who lives inside a cuckoo clock. Every hour he straps himself into his ejection seat and shoots through the doors of the clock. “Cuckoo!” He yells, “Cuckoo!” His work is of vital importance. The old lady who sits under the clock needs to take her medication exactly at the top of every hour. One day the man has the opportunity to win a substantial sum of money in a radio quiz. He loves gadgets and wants to buy a new computer. The only problem is that he can only dial in at the exact time he’s supposed to sit in his seat.

‘One afternoon in 2011 during EIFF, a man in coveralls – obviously with the maintenance department at Edmonton City Centre – walked up to me in the lobby of the movie theatre and said ‘I just want to thank you for Lunchbox Shorts’.  He grinned large and I was kinda surprised to know that my wee brainchild was attracting people other than office workers.  He then went on to articulate his opinions of shorts he’d already seen that week, and even shorts from years past.  Clearly, those coveralls were hiding and immensely savvy film critic.  And then he said the single most powerful sentence I have ever heard from a festival-goer… “When I walk into that theatre, I feel like a somebody.  When I leave, I become a nobody again.”  He went on to note that he loves that “you never know who’s sitting next to yu – they might be a director or an actor…” And when I pressed him to know more about his feelings of ‘being a nobody’ he explained that workin the Maintenance department requires a bit of invisibility.  No one wants to see the guy fixing the escalator, they just want to step onto a working escalator – no big deal, really.  I didn’t see Allen at the 2013 festival.  He was in the hospital, battling an illness that took him away shortly after that year’s EIFF.  Not a festival goes by that I don’t reflect on his words.  We are all ‘someone’.  To honour his memory, EIFF created the ALLEN (Cooke) AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING LUNCHBOX
